□ 커리큘럼
1. 석사학위를 취득하고자 하는 학생은 서강대학교 영어영문학과에서 개설하거나 인정한 과목을 택하여 최소한 27학점을 이수해야 한다(비논문 트랙은 36학점). 27학점 가운데 매학기 3학점(총9학점)까지는 연세대학교나 이화여자대학교에서 혹은 본 대학의 지도교 수 승인을 받아 다른 학과에서 취득할 수 있다. 모든 석사학위과정 학생에게는 입학 직 후 전공분야와 관계없이 임의로 지도교수가 배정되며, 입학 후 2학기 기말고사 종료 전 까지 자신의 전공 및 논문 지도 교수를 정하여 해당 교수의 승인을 받아야 한다. 이후 지도 교수를 변경해야 할 필요가 있을 때에는 이전 지도 교수와 새 지도 교수의 승인을 받아 지도교수 변경 신청서를 전공주임 교수에게 제출한다.
2. 문학 전공 학생은 영문학연구방법론(ENG6001), 그리고 아래의 프로세미나 세 분야들에 서 각각 1과목씩 총 4과목을 필수로 수강해야 한다. (총 12학점)

최소 이수 학점 27학점 중 위의 12학점을 제외한 나머지 학점은 문학전공 과목들뿐만 아니라 미국문화전공이나 어학전공, TETL전공 과목들 중에서 자유롭게 선택하여 이수 할 수 있다. 문학전공 대학원 주임교수 및 지도교수의 추천으로 학부 영문학 교과목을 수강한 경우 석사학위과정 이수학점으로 인정하지 않음.
□ 자격시험
문학: 21학점 이상 이수하고 3학기 이상 수학하였을 때 종합시험에 응시할 수 있다. 단 이수과목 중 2과목이상에서 C학점을 받은 학생은 응시 자격이 없다.
1) 종합시험은 분야별로 작성된 작품목록에 따라 3분야(고전영문학, 근/현대 영문학, 근/ 현대 미국문학)에 걸쳐 시행된다. 각 분야의 세부 영역들 중 1영역씩 총 3영역을 선 택해 치른다. 예) 고전영문학 분야 중 “중세르네상스 영문학”과 “왕정복고 및 18세기 영문학” 중 택일해야 한다. 종합시험을 치르는 3분야 중 최소 1분야는 응시자의 세부 전공 분야여야 한다. 예) 제인 오스틴에 관한 논문을 쓰고자 하는 학생은 3영역 중 하 나는 반드시 “19세기 영국문학” 영역으로 응시해야 한다. 3분야의 시험범위는 매 2년 마다 개정되는 석사과정 종합시험 작품목록으로 제한한다.
2) 3분야를 모두 통과(100점 만점에서 70점 이상)할 때 합격으로 인정한다. 1개 분야에서 과락이 나올 경우 다음 학기에 해당과목만 재시험을 치른다. 2개 분야 이상에서 과락 이 나올 경우 다음 학기에 전 분야에 걸쳐 재시험을 치러야 한다. 종합시험에서 2회 이상 불합격한 경우 다시 응시할 수 없다. 1과목 과락으로 다음 학기에 재시험에 응 시하였으나 불합격한 경우는 불합격 1회로 간주하고 그 다음 학기에 3과목 전부 다 시 응시해야 한다.
3) 외국어시험: 없음.
□ 논문
문학: 석사학위 논문은 영어로 작성하고 논문심사 위원회의 심사를 통과해야 한다.
Ⅱ. 박사학위과정
1. 문학
1) 박사학위과정 이수자는 서강대학교 대학원 영어영문학과에서 개설하거나 인정한 과 목에서 적어도 36학점을 취득해야 한다 (본교에서 논문트랙으로 석사학위를 받은 경 우 33학점). 이 36학점 중 적어도 24학점은 서강대학교 대학원 영어영문학과에서 개 설한 과목에서 이수해야 한다. 또한 학기 당 3학점까지는 연세대학교나 이화여자대 학교, 그 외 서강대학교에서 학점을 인정하는 다른 대학교 대학원에서 취득하거나, 혹은 본 학과 지도교수(지도교수가 정해지지 않은 경우에는 전공주임교수)의 승인을 받아 다른 학과에서 취득할 수 있다. 모든 박사과정 학생에게는 입학 직후 임의로 지 도교수가 배정되며, 입학 후 2학기 기말고사 종료 전까지 자신의 전공 및 논문 지도 교수를 정하여 해당 교수의 승인을 받아야 한다. 이후 지도 교수를 변경해야 할 필요 가 있을 때에는 이전 지도 교수와 새 지도 교수의 승인을 받아 지도교수 변경 신청서 를 전공주임 교수에게 제출한다.

1) TETL (문학을 활용한 영어교육) 전공은 영미문학, 영어교육, 영어학을 결합한 학제연 구분야로서, 지도교수와 학과장의 승인 하에 세부전공 분야를 정할 수 있다. 총 36학 점을 이수해야 하며, 자세한 필수요건은 다음과 같다.
1. 문학
1) 종합시험 응시자격: 종합시험은 3학기 이상 수료하고 27학점 이상 이수하였을 때 응 시할 수 있다. 단 이수과목 중 2과목 이상에서 C학점을 받은 경우 응시할 수 없다.
1) 종합시험 응시자격: 종합시험 응시자의 학위논문분야 과목을 포함하여 (박사학위과 정 입학 후) 27 학점을 취득하고 세 학기 이상을 수료한 자 중 “문학을 활용한 영어 교육실습”을 이수한 이후 종합시험에 응시할 수 있다.
분야는 다음 중에서 자유롭게 선택한다.
문학: 박사학위 논문초고를 졸업학기 첫 번째 주까지 지도교수와 주임교수에게 제출해 야 해당학기에 논문심사를 받을 수 있다.
문학: 박사학위 청구 논문 제출 이전에 영어영문학과에서 인정하는 학술지에 한 편 이상 의 논문 게재 실적이 있어야 한다.
Master’s Degree Program (thesis track)
1. Coursework requirements
(a) LIT (thesis track) students should take a minimum of 27 credit hours. Upon receiving the thesis advisor’s approval, students can take 3 credit hours a semester at other universities up to a total of 9 credit hours for the degree). All M.A. students will be temporarily assigned an advisor. (usually the graduate director), and all students should formally choose their thesis topic and advisor by the third
semester.
(b) LIT (thesis track) students should take 12 credit hours from ENG6001: Methodology for the Study of English Literature and from three pro-seminar courses in the following categories (one in each category): Early Modern British Literature (ENG6002 English Literature from the Middle Ages to 1650, ENG6003 Restoration and 18th-Century British Literature), Modern and Contemporary British Literature (ENG6004 19th-Century British Literature, ENG6005 20th-Century British Literature), Modern and Contemporary American Literature (ENG6006 Early and 19th-Century American Literature, ENG6007 20th-Century American Literature). Students can take the remaining 15 credit hours from courses offered by English Literature, American Cultural Studies, Linguistics, TESOL, or TETL majors.
2. Comprehensive Examinations
(a) LIT (thesis track) students can apply for the Comprehensive Examination after taking a minimum of 21 credit hours and completing the third semester. Students who receive a C in two courses or more cannot apply.
(b) LIT (thesis track) students should take the exam on three subjects in three categories (one subject in
each category). The subjects and categories are the same as those for the pro-seminar courses.
Students should take at least one subject that is relevant to the thesis topic. Students who receive a
final grade of A+ in a pro-seminar do not need to take the exam in that subject.
(c) The exam usually consists of three parts: identifications (30 points), short essay questions (30 points),
and essay question(s) (40 points). The final structure of the exam remains at the discretion of Faculty.
(d) To pass the exam, students should get a minimum score of 70 out of 100 points in all three subjects. If students fail one subject, they should retake the exam only on that subject the following semester. (If
students fail the same subject twice, they will be considered as failing the entire exam and should
retake all three subjects the following semester.) If students fail two subjects or more, they should
retake the exam for all three subjects the following semester. Students who fail the entire exam twice
will not be allowed to take it again
3. Thesis
The thesis must be written in English, follow the MLA style (as outlined in the most current version of the MLA Handbook), be approximately 15,000 words long (inclusive of titles, chapter headings, and works cited), and address literary topics.
Master’s Degree Program (non-thesis track)
(a) LIT (non-thesis track) students should take a minimum of 36 credit hours.
(b) LIT students (non-thesis track) should take 12 credit hours which will include ENG6001 Methodology for the Study of English Literature and three pro-seminar courses in the following categories (one in each category): Early Modern British Literature (ENG6002 English Literature from the Middle Ages to 1650, ENG6003 Restoration and 18th-Century British Literature), Modern and Contemporary British Literature (ENG6004 19th-Century British Literature, ENG6005 20th-Century British Literature), Modern and Contemporary American Literature (ENG6006 Early and 19th-Century American Literature, ENG6007 20th-Century American Literature). Students can take the remaining 24 credit hours from courses offered by American Cultural Studies, Linguistics, Literature, TESOL, or TETL majors.
(c)No Comprehensive Exams are taken by LIT (non-thesis track) students. However, students are required to maintain an overall minimum GPA of 3.3 every semester. At the conclusion of the final semester of the student’s M.A. candidature, a committee of Faculty members will evaluate the student’s academic transcripts and a writing sample from one of their courses to determine whether or not they may graduate.
(d) Students intending to continue their studies at the Ph.D. level are strongly advised to pursue the “thesis
track” option. Other than in exceptional cases, the Masters (non-thesis track) program can generally be
considered to offer a terminal degree.
Doctoral Degree Program (Literary Studies)
1. Coursework requirements
(a) Ph.D. students should take a minimum of 36 credit hours. Those students who have already acquired an M.A. degree from Sogang University’s Graduate School should take a minimum of 33 credit hours. A minimum of 24 out of 36 credit hours should be taken from courses offered at, or approved by, the English Literature major in Sogang University’s Department of English. Upon receiving the thesis advisor’s approval, students can take 3 credit hours a semester at other universities (up to a total of 9 credit hours for the degree). All new students will temporarily be assigned an advisor (usually the graduate director). Students should choose their thesis topic and advisor and get the approval from the graduate director by the end of the second semester.
(b) Ph.D. students should take ENG6001: Methodology for the Study of English Literature if they have not written their M.A. thesis in English.
(c) Ph.D. students can take up to 9 credit hours of Individual Research (3 credit hours a semester).
2. Comprehensive Examinations
(a) Ph.D. students can apply for the Comprehensive Examination after taking a minimum of 27 credit hours. Students who receive a C in two courses or more cannot apply. Unlike Masters-level students, Ph.D. students are required to take Comprehensive Exams irrespective of the results achieved in pro-seminar subjects.
(b) Ph.D. students should take the exam on two subjects: a major subject, and a minor subject. Major and minor subjects should be chosen among the six pro-seminar subjects.
(c)If they fail a pro-seminar class, Ph.D. students will not be allowed to change the class after they fail. Students who fail three times cannot apply for the exam again.
3. Defense of Theoretical Methodology
Ph.D. students will be required to make an oral defense within a theoretical field specific to their dissertation. Advisors will compose a reading list for the oral defense, which will be scheduled to take place before the thesis proposal meetings (and after the Comprehensive Exams have been completed by the candidate). The defense will comprise of a 30 minute presentation, followed by a 30 minute Q-&-A session between the candidate and the committee (comprising of the advisor, the graduate director, and one other Faculty member).
4. Proposal Defense
LIT students who pass the Comprehensive Examination should submit a thesis proposal (about 20 pages) and an annotated bibliography to a thesis committee (chaired by a thesis advisor) and do the proposal defense. Details regarding the defense will be decided by the committee. LIT students are strongly recommended to do the defense within a year after the exam.
5. Second Language Proficiency Test
LIT students should take the Second Language Proficiency Test. Candidates among the German, French, Chinese, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Korean languages (the last option applicable only to international students).
6. Thesis
(a) Ph.D. students who want to be eligible for a thesis defense should submit a full draft of the thesis to both the advisor and the graduate director by the end of the first week of the graduating semester.
(b) The thesis must be written in English, follow the most current version of the MLA Handbook, and address literary topics.(c) Ph.D. students should have at least one publication in a KCI-level journal before submitting their thesis to the university.
Doctoral Degree Program (Teaching English Through Literature)
Our TETL program provides training for educators from diverse vocational backgrounds, and we offer a
multifaceted degree program (at both M.A. and Ph.D. levels) that delivers skill-sets from across a range of
academic disciplines including Literary Studies, Linguistics, and English Education.
1. Coursework Requirements
36 credit hours in total, comprising of 24 credit hours from Literature courses (N.B. TETL students should take at least one pro-seminar course), and 6 credit hours from English-Education courses:
(a) Required course (3 credit hours) - ENG6278: Methodology for Teaching ESL/EFL.
(b)Elective course (3 credit hours) - ENG6217: Second Language Acquisition, or any courses related to
Language Testing, TESOL Grammar, TESOL Reading and Writing, or TESOL Speaking and Listening.
(c) 3 credit hours from Linguistics courses: ENG6259: Studies in Applied Linguistics, or ENG6405: Linguistics for English Teachers
(d) 3 credit hours from ENG6400 (practicum): Teaching English Through Literature (N.B. TETL Students must take ENG6400 while they are teaching a class (i.e. after finishing the coursework and before taking the Comprehensive Examination). Students will regularly meet with faculty members or experienced teachers to discuss the issues regarding teaching and get advice on their own teaching experience).
(e) If any of the above classes are not offered, the advisor will decide which classes the candidate is to
take instead.
(f) Provision: Under the condition of being approved by the graduate director and/or their advisor, TETL students may develop new course requirements reflecting their previous training and educational
objectives.
2. Complementary Coursework Requirements
If a student has an M.A. degree either in Linguistics or English Education, they must take 9 extra credit hours of pro-seminar courses in Literature. If a student has an M.A. degree in English Education or a certificate of TESOL, they may be exempt from the requirement of English Education courses. If a student has an M.A. degree in Linguistics with a focus on the English language, they may be
exempt from the requirement of Linguistics courses. If a student has an M.A. degree in Humanities or Social Sciences from an English-speaking country, they will be required to take extra credit hours of pro-seminar courses in Literature (all exemptions should be approved by the graduate director).
3. Non-Credit Requirements
(a) Workshop participation (a minimum of 50 hours in total)
(b) Teaching experience (a minimum of 6 hours per week for one semester)
4. Comprehensive Examination
(a) The Comprehensive Examination is composed of English Literature (60%), Applied Linguistics (20%), and English Education (20%).
(b) For the exam on Literature, in addition to the mandatory areas of 20th-Century British Literature and
20th-Century American Literature, the student can choose one area from the following: Middle Ages and Renaissance Literature, Restoration and 18th-Century British Literature, 19th-Century British Literature, Early and 19th-Century American Literature, Literary and Critical Theories, Children’s Literature.
(c) As for the area of Applied Linguistics, the student may either be given a set of questions or topics in
advance based on the related course(s) they have taken, or assigned a textbook in the field. If the
student has a Master’s degree in Linguistics, they may be exempt from the exam on Applied Linguistics.
(d) As for the area of English Education, the student may either be given a set of questions or topics in
advance, or assigned a textbook from the related courses they have taken. If the student has an M.A.
degree in English Education, they may be exempt from the exam on English Education.
5. Thesis
The thesis must be written in English, follow the most current version of the MLA Handbook, and address TETL issues or literary topics.
